There is still no substitute for a good Heckel bassoon. However, due to scarcity and price, I recommend the following models of Fox Bassoons:

Beginner: Renard 240 (short bore)

Advanced to professional: 201

Professional: 660 or 601 (I prefer the 660 because it is less heavy in tone and biting the reed is less necessary.)
